Overview
The Astoria Generating Company, L.P, a USPowerGen Company is proposing to enhance the Astoria Generating Station with the addition of approximately 250-700 megawatts (MW) of new cleaner state-of-the-art electric generation while reducing the actual net emissions of criteria pollutants. The Luyster Creek Energy Project will be a highly efficient, state-of-the-art combined cycle facility that operates primarily on natural gas. The facility will have limited use of oil as a backup fuel for system reliability. A variety of methods are being explored to improve environment within the community such as, retirement of existing equipment, enforceable permit limits, emission control technologies, and other community-based improvements. These strategies will be fully explored in the environmental studies that will be performed as part of the permitting efforts.
The Luyster Creek Energy Project is designed to meet the current and future increasing demands for electricity in the local area and within New York City and will help maintain in-city generation requirements for overall system reliability. Environmental benefits will result from commitments made by Astoria Generating Company to achieve net environmental improvements through measures to be scoped and implemented in cooperation with the community and stakeholders.
